Matthew 6:1 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven (NIV)

There was a time, early in my walk with Christ, when I put money in the collection plate I put it in a way that the amount would show.  I was proud of how much I was giving.  That wasn’t a gift to God.  It was a prideful boast of how much better I was than those around me.  That attitude by itself was enough to make everyone else around me much better than I.  Shakespeare said, “Life is a stage.”  Our problem is we are playing to the wrong audience.  It is God Who is watching us at all times.  He even knows our unspoken thoughts and actions.  Knowing this, and comparing us with Jesus must lead us to the decision there is no righteousness in us except where we allow God’s Holy Spirit to rule.  Yes, God’s light in us is to be seen by others but not so they see how good or righteous we are but that they see how much God loves them through us and how forgiving He is.  Why, when we follow the precepts of God, are we doing so?  Is it because it makes us feel more righteous than others or is it because we love God and want to be pleasing to Him?  We must answer this question in all areas of our life.
