Babbling

Matthew 6:7-8 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. (NIV)

We’ve all heard them.  People on TV and in churches praying aloud but actually, instead of talking with God they are trying to give a message to those around who can hear them.  When we pray, we are talking to God.  We are not talking to others though we might be praying aloud and they might be joining us in agreement with our prayer, we are addressing God and not trying to prove a point or give a message in the guise of prayer to others.  We talk to God in the same voice we speak to others.  We don’t need to yell at Him.  He can even hear our thoughts so His hearing must be awesome.  We don’t need to keep repeating His name.  He knows His name and knows we are talking to Him.  We don’t make demands but do speak with faith on His promises recorded in His written word.  We don’t need to change our language to some formal, old-fashion words.  We just need to talk with Him.  Prayer is a 2 way conversation.  Even in public prayer we should give Him time to respond to all those who joined their hearts and minds in that prayer.  I private prayer we should give Him even more time to respond to us.  Prayer is not just a “give me quick, God” time.  Prayer is a conversation between two who love each other.  There are times we might speak a quick, “Help me or Help them” prayer but we need special time every day to confirm our love for each other.

I have a praise, worship and prayer group at my house every other week.  Whoever has a song in their heart starts it and whoever knows it joins in.  Whoever has a word of praise or thanks to God or worship speaks it out.  Whoever has a prayer on their heart for our nation or community speaks it out.  They only pray a few sentences and we don’t repeat what they pray in our own words because we are all in agreement with their prayer.  The one thing we have to learn is to pray loud enough for everyone in the group to hear or we can’t be unified in agreement.  I encourage all of you to think about starting a small group to worship God and pray for our nation.  It only takes an hour every so often and if more of us would do this God said, “If my people who are called by My name would humble themselves and pray I will forgive their sins and heal their land.”  Let us do our part and God will heal our land.
