How to Pray

Matthew 6:9 9 “This, then, is how you should pray (NIV)

Please notice one three letter word.  How.  Jesus gave us this prayer as an example of “how” to pray.  Though there is nothing wrong with reciting this prayer word for word, the intention was for it to be an example of what we should include in our prayers.  As we read verses 9 through 13 we notice it begins with an address.  “Our Father.”  This tells us we are to pray to God, the Father.  It also reminds us that we aren’t God’s only child.  We have siblings.  Next is “in heaven.”  Reminding us where our Father is and where our home is since our home is with our Father.  “Hallowed be your name” means His name is Holy.  Here, after the address, is the praise and worship.  We are acknowledging God, our Father is Holy.  We are adoring Him.  We will continue with the remaining verses tomorrow.  Right now, we must ask ourselves if we start our prayers with addressing God, our Father and if we go into adoration or if we just start out with our wants and needs.
