Judgments

Matthew 7:1-2 1 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. (NIV)

This is a hard one.  We are raised to judge our actions and the actions of others.  That leads us into judging others by what we perceive are their actions.  Over the years of practicing judging others we tend to become even more judgmental.  We may not meet the standards we hold for ourselves but we don’t like when others don’t meet our standards.  Not only do they need to meet our standards, we expect them to do it in the same way we would.  This verse tells us our attitude of judgement will be mirrored back to us.  Now, if we look at it from another standpoint.  If our measure is replacing love for judgement it is that same love that comes back to us.  I have long quoted to myself when I find myself becoming judgmental the saying, “There but for the grace of God go I.”  We seldom know what is behind a person’s behavior.  We are to judge by the scriptures on right for wrong but it is the act we are to judge, not the person doing the act.  We are to pray for the person doing the act that is wrong.  The only way we can do this is through the power of God’s Holy Spirit.  Let’s try to make a habit of asking God to love others through us and keep our judgements to the actions not the people.
