The Golden Rule

Matthew 7:12 12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. (NIV)

This verse is known as the “Golden Rule.” We must notice it says “what you would have them do to you.”  It doesn’t say what they have done to you.  So often we want to retaliate.  We see this in the political scene with the name calling.  It seems to be a contest on who can call who the worst name last.  We also see this at Christmas in a competition of outgiving the other.  We forget the reason for all our words and actions is love.  This love is a God love.  It is a love that wants God’s best for others.  We really don’t know what anyone else wants.  They may not like what we want or how we want to be treated.  But, as followers of Jesus and having God’s Holy Spirit inside us to guide us, we can pray before we speak or act and ask Him what it is we are to say or do.  We must notice this verse starts out “So in everything.”  There are no exceptions to our words or actions.  All must be in line with God’s love, not only for us, but for others.  We must ask God to show us the areas and/or the people where we have not been doing us, ask for forgiveness and repent and make the correct changes in our words and/or actions with the ones He reveals to us.
