Fruits

Matthew 7:16 16 By their fruit you will recognize them (NIV)

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. (NIV)

Though this verse in Matthew is referring to recognizing false prophets by their fruit, it means their fruit is not the fruit of the Spirit quoted in Galatians.  We must consider ourselves.  What fruit do people see in us?  We need to look at each one of these fruits in a nakedly honest attitude and see what fruit we have not permitted to grow in us.  We are given the bud of each of these fruits when we receive God’s Holy Spirit.  All buds must be nourished to grow.  We nourish through the studying and meditation on the Word of God (The Holy Bible) and through our conversational prayer with God.  Then we must practice the fruit which is the digesting process.  We don’t like being that honest with ourselves but in order to grow the fruit God’s Spirit has given us, we must look honestly.  This doesn’t mean hyper-critically.  Putting ourselves down doesn’t help.  We must view this as a learning and growing process.  We can’t work on all the fruit at once so let’s ask God to show us which one we need to work on first.  It helps to memorize these 2 verses in Galatians so we can use it as a guide as we walk out our days.  Just remember the first fruit is love and we must love ourselves as we look honestly at our weaknesses.  After all, God loves us so who are we not to love the one God loves.
