Believe It

Matthew 8:13 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” (NIV)

Jesus still says that to us today.  Go and it will happen just as we believe it will.  Our question we must answer for ourselves is what do we really believe.  When we pray and ask for something, what is really in our heart and mind about the answer.  When we lived in Florida near the beach we had a group of college students who wanted to be baptized.  It was the boys who wanted this.  We took them to the beach and it was storm surge which means really big and frequent waves.  They were baptized several times before they waded out far enough to be officially baptized.  There were several older men on the beach who, individually and quietly were praying for the waves to be still as Jesus commanded on the lake.  That didn’t happen.  On the way to our house, the girls in the group decided they also wanted to be baptized.  I always kept several swim suits of various sizes in the house for such an occasion.  While the girls were getting dressed, the older men said what they were each praying and wondering why it didn’t happen.  They were asked, “Did you speak out loud in faith?”  The answer was no.  They were afraid it wouldn’t happen and didn’t want to be embarrassed.  That’s why it didn’t happen.  When we took the girls to the beach the men spoke in unison out loud, “Ocean, be still.”  There was a half circle surrounding the girls that followed them out that was like glass.  The girls were baptized in the stillness with the storm surge surrounding the half circle.  As they walked back to the beach the storm surge followed behind them.  We must learn to speak the commands of God in the same boldness and faith Jesus spoke.
