Take Up The Cross

Matthew 10:38 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. (NIV)

Jesus is not referring to the cross of the crucifixion.  He is referring to self-sacrifice.  We are to sacrifice pride.  We are to accept whatever He allows to come our way and walk through it in faith and trust.  There is an old adage, “God didn’t promise you a rose garden.”  I actually find that adage a little strange.  Roses are beautiful and have a beautiful aroma but they also have thorns that can scratch, pierce, draw blood and even leave scars.  Life is very much like that.  When walking with Jesus life is beautiful.  Our praises produce a sweet aroma for God.  But as we walk the things that come our way we get scraped, pierced and scared.  However, our scars heal when given to God.  Lent is a good time for us to remember to “take up our cross” no matter what it is at this time.  As we take it up let it be in an attitude of worship, praise and thanksgiving to God that no matter what the cross might be, He will guide and sustain us and through it we will reflect His beauty and the sweet aroma as our praises unite with Him.
