Matthew 26:8-13 8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. 9 “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.”
10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. 12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. (NIV)

Sounds really spiritual when the disciples said it’s to extravagant and should go to help the poor.  But Jesus said it was to prepare Him for what was waiting ahead for Him.  Many of us forget we are precious to God and are worthy of a little extravagance from time to time.  There are many hard roads to travel in this life.  When there is an occasion for a little extravagance it lifts our spirits and prepares us to face more rough roads.  Yes, we are to give to the poor.  But if we neglect ourselves we become unable to give to the poor for we sink into depression from the hard times without celebrating the victories.  This woman showed her priorities.  Jesus was so precious to her that spending an entire year’s income on Him to show Him how precious He was to her was more important.  I would imagine this helped Jesus remember it was for His great love for us that He was going to face the hardest and most painful ordeal anyone has ever faced.   Let us remember since Jesus loves us that much we should love ourselves in addition to loving others.
