Matthew 7:16 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?

Galatians 5:22-23 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. (NIV)

It’s important to notice it is by our fruit, not by our works.  We tend to judge people by their works.  Good works are not only done by Christians; they are done by people of various religions or even no religion.  From the verse in Matthew we must look at the verse in Galatians to determine to what fruits Jesus is referring.  If good works lack these fruits they are really nothing more than filthy rags to God.  God looks at the heart, not the works.  Someone full of the Holy Spirit and growing in these fruits will do good works because of the fruits.  We must pay attention to each fruit and see which ones we’ve not permitted to grow in us. Let us be diligent to feed all these fruits through meditation on the written word and conversations with God.
