Philippians 3:20 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, (NIV)

The original Greek word from which “citizenship” is translated is “politeneu” which actually means good citizen.  Paul is encouraging the Romans in Philipi (a Roman city) to be good citizens of Rome.  Paul was proud to be a Roman.  But he reminded them that before this world’s citizenship comes the citizenship we have through Jesus in God’s throne room.  We must learn to be good citizens of both.  Of this world where we currently live we are to pray and intercede for our government and the leaders and people.  Of our citizenship in the eternal kingdom we are to obey our King and spread His light and love through us to all we meet.  We must be honest with ourselves as we look over our actions to see if we are really being good citizens both here and in God’s kingdom.  We must ask ourselves if His kingdom is really within us like He said it could and should be.
