Discipline is a Choice

2 Timothy 1:7 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. (NIV)

To be very honest, there are times I just don’t want to sit down, pray, meditate and write a devotion.  Usually it’s because I’m tired.  But, as I find myself resisting, I think about how Jesus didn’t want to go be tortured and then crucified on the cross.  Yet, without a single complaint, He set His face toward Jerusalem and what lay ahead for Him.  There are many things we don’t want or feel like doing that we know will bring us deeper in our relationship with God.  The question is, do we really love Him and want to be pleasing to Him?  If we do, we must make the choice to put our fleshly desires aside, breathe in spiritually to get more spiritual energy and chose to move forward with what God would have us do.  I didn’t feel like leaving my daughter’s home during our July 4th celebration to go back to the hospital and answer a call by a patient.  I did and was blessed by being allowed to assure someone of their salvation before they went into surgery.  Discipline is necessary but only successful through our choice.  When we choose discipline over convenience we are empowered and able to allow the love of God flow in and through us to others.  Let us be choose to be disciplined in or times of prayer, meditation, Bible study and service.
