Matthew 3:13-15 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented (NIV)

Why would Jesus submit to water baptism?  Baptism is an external sign of dying to man’s sinful nature and being risen up to new life in Christ.  Jesus was without sin and Jesus was and is already Christ, the Messiah.  Why then did He want to be baptized?  He said it was to fulfill all righteousness.  But Jesus was already righteous.  Jesus, through His baptism was signifying His brotherhood with all mankind.  He came to walk where we had to walk and show us how to walk our walk in God’s way.  The baptism was the start of His ministry.  Likewise, water baptism is the start of our walk in the righteousness of Jesus.  As we read the scriptures and follow how Jesus walked on this earth, we can learn how we are to walk.  The word “Christian” means little Christ.  We are to be reflections of Christ.  Let us be sure to know how Jesus walked on this earth and be good imitators of His walk.
