The Pit

Genesis 37:23-24 23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe he was wearing— 24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it (NIV)

To understand how God works with us we must understand why Joseph was trown into a pit.  It’s evident he wasn’t liked by his brothers.  As we read about the early life of Joseph we see he brags to his brothers about his dreams.  He is also favored over his brothers by his father.  Joseph made it worse by showing off the gift his father gave him and rubbing it into his brothers.  Why is this important to us?  We tend to blame other people when we face trials.  We fail to ask God to show us what part we played in getting into situations.  It’s so much easier to blame others rather than take responsibility for our own actions or inactions.  The dream God gave Joseph would eventually be fulfilled but Joseph had to go through a lot of difficult circumstance to mold his character into what was necessary to serve God in the fulfillment of the dream.  When we are down, we must get God’s perspective on why we are down.  We must be sure we are hearing God and not Satan.  God will give us conviction not condemnation.  God never condemns us.  He loves us and we stand forgiven.  Condemnation comes from Satan.  We must side with God, admit where we went wrong and move on with the Holy Spirit as a righteous child of His through Jesus.  Learn from our pits and move on with joy, thanksgiving and faith in God’s workings in and through us.

One more thing we must notice.  The reason Reuben said to throw Joseph in the pit is so he could pull him out later and deliver him to his father.  When we are in the pit, the Holy Spirit wants to get our attention, pull us out and deliver us back to the Father.  Pits are to get our attention back on God.
