John 3:10 10 “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? (NIV)

I hope all readers have read the intro to this blog which states these devotions are just a jump start and looking up the scripture and reading the entire section is very important.  I only clip in one or 2 verses to start you off.

We are looking at Nicodemus.  He is a teacher and a Pharisee and yet he recognizes the teachings of Jesus are from God.  He isn’t able to understand the teachings because he is bogged down with laws.  He is accustomed to looking at individual statements rather than the whole picture.  Without looking at the hole, the pieces don’t make any sense.  Before we condemn Nicodemus, we must look at ourselves.  It doesn’t help our understanding of the whole that the Bible is written in verses.  We memorize verses but tend to forget how they fit in the entire picture.  Without the entire picture, it is hard to understand.  Nicodemus was looking at Jesus’ statement of being born again from a worldly viewpoint.  To understand he had to remember Genesis and how God breathed His Spirit, His image, into man and how man lost it through sin.  It is this Spirit that must be reborn in us and that is only possible through Jesus by our accepting Him into our hearts, minds and lives as more than our Savior.  He must become the Lord (the leader, king, director. Instructor) of our lives.  When we do that God breathes His Holy Spirit back into our lives and we are once again in the image of God.  Let’s be sure we read and meditate on entire sections of God’s written word, not just take out a verse or 2 in order to prove a point we want to prove.
