Giving Our Best

John 12:3 3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. (NIV)

This pint of pure nard was worth a year’s income in that day.  Mary was giving her all to Jesus.  This was an outward sign of love for her Savior.  Mary didn’t know she was preparing Jesus for burial.  She only knew Jesus raised her brother from the dead and that He was the Messiah promised and sent by God the Father.  She didn’t understand all that the Messiah meant but she knew He loved them and they loved Him.  She worshiped Jesus with complete abandonment.  I had a friend who learned from this lesson.  A family in our church lost everything from a fire.  We were all gathering household items to give them.  My friend went through her linen closet looking for old sheets she no longer wanted.  In the process, she had to move new sheets that hadn’t even been opened.  As she took out the old sheets she her the Holy Spirit say, “You keep your best for yourself and give me the discards?”  She immediately put the old sheets away and gave the new, unused sheets.  So often we are counting the cost of what we give like all of it belongs to us and we think we are do great in sharing some of what we have with God.  This is backwards.  All we have belongs to God and He allows us to share in what He has.  As we see needs, let us give generously with love to God as we give to Him through others who are in need.
