Twisting Scripture

Luke 18:12 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ (NIV)

There was an item on Facebook about tithing.  The man said pastors are lying to us about tithing.  He claims tithing is an old testament law and we are free from the old testament law.  He claimed tithing is not in the new testament.  Then, why is it in Luke.  Tithe means tenth.  Jesus didn’t say not to obey the law of tithing.  He spoke often of giving.  This man is confused because there are many pastors who claim we tithe because if we do, we will get back that and more.  That is a twisting of the promises in the Bible.  True it says, “Give and it will be given unto you.”  This doesn’t mean we give because we want to get.  We are to give out of love.  In reality God owns all that is in this world.  That means He owns whatever we have.  He allows us to be stewards of what He give us but He expects us to honor His word and give out of love and obedience.  It is a joy to be allowed to use 90% of what God give us (less offerings over the tithe He guides us to give).  Tithing is a joy.  I pray for that misguided man on Facebook and for those who believe his twisted interpretation of God’s Word.
