Job 14:7-9 7 “At least there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not fail.8 Its roots may grow old in the ground and its stump die in the soil,9 yet at the scent of water it will bud and put forth shoots like a plant (NIV)

Sometimes things happen that make us feel helpless and hopeless.  But, the above scripture reminds us that as long as we have breath we have hope.  We also have help.  Sometimes the Bible refers to the Holy Spirit as the water of life.  When we have opened our hearts and minds to God through Jesus, His Son, and strive to follow Him in all our ways, we have the water of the Holy Spirit in us.  When we find ourselves in that hopeless or helpless situation all we need to do is look to God.  We tell Him how we feel and ask Him to show us the way through our hopelessness.  The Holy Spirit is our guide and our helper.  As we open God’s instruction book for living (the Holy Bible) we ask the Holy Spirit to guide us in reading and meditating on God’s written word.  As we pray, read and meditate we are refilled with the hope of our salvation in Jesus Christ.  We redress ourselves in God’s Armor (Ephesians 6:13-17) picking up the sword (the words in the Bible) to slay our negative feelings.  Before long, we will stand victorious.
