1 Peter 1:18-21 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God (NIV)

We sing songs about the blood of Jesus but we really don’t talk about it much.  We don’t like to really recognize the seriousness of sin.  We don’t like to think about God demanding that only blood can cover sin.  In the Old Testament, before God sent His Word down to earth in the form of Jesus, the only way for forgiveness of sin was by the blood offering of a perfect animal.  God did the firs sacrifice in killing an animal to cover Adam and Eve’s sin nakedness with the skin of an animal.  Animal sacrifice shad to be repeated over and over.  God, in His great mercy, and which He had planned since before He even established creation, had in mind a permanent forgiveness or mankind’s sin.  This perfect sacrifice was the blood of Jesus.  Only His blood could cover sin for all eternity.  This is because only His blood is God’s blood since Jesus and God are One.  Only His blood is righteous and perfect.  How do we get His perfect, righteous blood to wipe out our sins?  We accept Jesus into our heart, mind and life as our Lord and Savior.  As Lord, this means we will obey Him to our fullest ability.  As Savior, we acknowledge we have no righteousness in and of ourselves and are dependent on the righteousness of Jesus to cover our sin.  Let us be sure to thank God for His incredible sacrifice in the shedding of the blood of His Son, His Word, Jesus to cleanse us for all time from our sin and separation from Him.
