The Tongue

James 3:7-8 7 Every sea creature, reptile, bird, or animal is tamed and has been tamed by man, 8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison (NIV)

I encourage you to read and meditate on all of James 3.  It deals with the tongue (our words spoken) more than anywhere else in the Bible.  Our tongue can do great damage.  Not only with words spoken to or about others but also to ourselves.  We are who and what we say we are.  When we constantly say we’re tired (or anything else), we become more and more tired (or whatever else we say we are.).  Notice in Acts when the Holy Spirit first came upon and within the disciples in the upper room, it first settled on their tongues, changing their words.  The bit in a horse’s mouth is extremely small compared to the size of the horse.  Our tong is comparatively small compared to most other parts of our body.  It is the bit in the mouth of the horse that controls the horse.  It is the tongue that controls us.  Our bit is the Holy Spirit.  We must learn to allow the Holy Spirit to control our tongues.  To do this we must put God’s words in our minds and hearts to enable the Holy Spirit to choose the right words for us.  Let us learn to let the Holy Spirit guard out tongue so it is used for good and not hurt.
