Healing Prayers

Matthew 10:8 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give. (NIV)

There are many verses in the Bible telling us to pray for the sick and they will be healed.  As a hospital chaplain I see too many instances when the sick I and others have prayed for aren’t healed.  As I’ve mediated on this problem I have discerned the freedom of choice God has given mankind  We have the freedom not to take care of our bodies.  We don’t always eat what is best for us, we don’t exercise, we don’t sleep enough, we use drugs, alcohol and unrestrained sexual contact.  God will not override our choices.  When we abuse our bodies we pay the price for it.  Not all sickness is a result of our own personal abuse.  Some is environmental and some hereditary.  I’ve seen so many times the prayers for those conditions answered and healing restored.  My point is, if we want to maintain health, much of the responsibility is our own.  Let us remember our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.  Let us take care of it even better than we take care of the buildings we call churches that the Holy Spirit may dwell freely and mightily in our bodies and flow out from us into this sinful world in all the power of the Godhead.
