Team Players

Romans 5:13 13 To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. (NIV)

(NOTE: As always, I encourage you to open your own Bibles in the translation you understand the best and read the entire passage.)

We tend to look at the law in the wrong light.  We think the law is there to restrict us.  The law is there to show us how much we need Jesus.  Without the law we would only consider ourselves.  No one else’s needs would matter to us.  It would be a “me first” attitude.  The law actually liberates us from the sin of “only me.”  But, in our own effort, we can’t possibly fulfill the law.  As we read on in the passage, (Romans 5:15)1  But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!  We were made to be team players.  We are to team with God and with one another.  In a team, when one person breaks a law or rule of the game, the entire team is punished.  Adam and Eve broke the law and mankind has been breaking the law ever since.  But God loves the man He made so much that He, in His grace and mercy sent His Word, His Son, Jesus, to become as man and pay the price of our disobedient sin.  Does this mean we can continue, willfully breaking the laws of God?  No.  If we really have received Jesus into our hearts, minds and lives, we will want to please Him, serve Him and obey Him.  Let us ask the Holy Spirit, Who dwells in each and every believer, to help us be good team players.
