Titus 1:15 15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. (NIV)

We’ve all been told at one time or anther to let our conscience be our guide.  Our conscience is not a dependable guide.  Our conscience is developed from how we are raised, our family values, the culture around us and what we’ve been taught to believe.  It is only when we have the Holy Spirit living in us and we have trained ourselves and fed upon the written word of God that our conscience can be of value to us.  Paul struggled with this. (Romans 7:15)   “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” (NIV) Remember Paul was, in good conscience, persecuting the believers in Jesus before He met Him on the road.  His conscience was now in training to agree with the word of God.  Let us be sure we feed our conscience with the written word of God and listen to the Holy Spirit within us.

Obedience Through Love

Matthew 22:38-40 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments (NIV)

So many pride themselves on not breaking any of the 10 commandments.  In actually all of us have broken some point of each and every commandment.  All 10 commandments are built on these two cited by Jesus.  The commandments were given not for us to make God happy with us.  They were given to us so we could be happy and contented in our lives.  They were given to us to show us the way to contentment.  When we try to obey the commandments on our own out of a since of required obedience we are missing the mark.  God loves us.  There is no stopping His love.  He wants us to enjoy the lives He’s given us.  Living by the commandments through the 2 Jesus cited brings contentment. Contentment brings happiness.  Let us remember our obedience must come from love and a desire to give and receive the love of God, directly through Him and also through others and through ourselves to others.
