Only One Way

John 14:6 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (NIV)

To understand any language, we need to no the grammatic rules of that language and the tenses and meaning of the words.  The article “the” is a singular article.  It is the same as saying one and only.  Jesus is saying there is only one way to come to the Father.  He tells us how that way is.  It is only through Him.  He say “I am.”  He also says He is truth and life.  Many who believe God is love have trouble believing that God would have only one way to be with Him.  But God, Who is love, is also the Creator.  It is His right to make the rules for all of His creation.  It is because He is love that He provided a way for disobedient, sinful man to come to Him.  It was a very costly way.  It cost His Word, His Son, Jesus to put aside His own divinity and come to earth in the form and feelings and emotions of man, God own making, to experience life in the way God first intended man to experience life with Him.  We cannot imagine or relate to such a great cost.  We can accept the rules of God and recognize we can never, on our own, ever be good enough to approach God.  It is only through the covering of the righteousness of Jesus and His blood covering our sinfulness that we can approach God, our Father and Maker.  It’s not a case of being good.  It’s a case of accepting His love, grace and mercy through Jesus Christ.  That is the most perfect love.
