Isaiah 53:3 3 He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem. (NIV)

I’ve seen several of my friends who have had to watch a love one die inch by inch.  I’ve seen their suffering in their eyes and heard it in their voices.  I’ve listened to their heartfelt prayers to God asking Him if He didn’t really understand how much they were hurting.  God does understand our suffering and hurting.  God the Father and God the Son both experienced suffering far more intense than any of us will ever have to go through or experience.  We can’t imagine the pain the Father felt as He watched His only Son suffer the persecution, anger and the cross when He, the Son, had never done anything to deserve any of it but had faced the suffering on behalf of all of sinful humanity.  A humanity who didn’t recognize their sinfulness nor recognize the Son and the love that it took to pay the price for humanity’s sins.  We must stop and think about it.  We can’t really understand the complete cost.  So much of our suffering is caused by our sin of commission or omission.  Our bodies get sick because we don’t care for them properly or because we have so polluted the earth we were entrusted to tend.  Yet, in spite of our sinfulness, God the Father and God the Son loves us so very much that they endured suffering like no other.  The next time we feel we are suffering let us remember to thank God that He understands and that He bore the biggest brunt of suffering for us so we would live for eternity in His very real Presence.  God the Son will always bear the scars of His suffering so we would be freed from ours.
