Being First

Luke 14:11 11 For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (NIV)

I’ve watched in various churches at people who think they have a special seat and get upset if anyone sits in what they consider to be their seat.  I’ve also watched at church dinners at people who are determined to be the first in line to be sure they get all they want of their favorite dish.  They are determined to put their own desires before anyone else.  They are exalting themselves.  There is nothing wrong with wanting to sit in the same place at church as long as our attitude is not a possessive one.  If someone else is already there we need to greet them and find another seat.  The above scripture is reminding us to have a giving, servant’s heart – a gracious spirit of putting others first before our own self-interest.  We are not to consider ourselves as more important than any other.  We are all equally important and loved in the eyes of God and are to treat others as equals.

John 15:7 7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. (KJV)

Many translations use the wore “remain” rather than “abide.”  What this scripture means is to allow all of Christ, His words, His actions, His love stay within us in our minds, hearts and actions.  When it seems our prayers aren’t being answered we must check to see if we are still abiding or remaining in Christ.  It might be we aren’t following through on something He has already instructed us to do or maybe we are doing or saying something He has instructed us not to do or say.  Unanswered prayers are never because God doesn’t love us.  Unanswered prayers are when we aren’t abiding or remaining in Christ.  Let us immerse ourselves in His words through His love and grace, abiding or remaining in Him through our minds, our hearts, our words and our actions
