Good Works

Galatians 2:16 16 know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified. (NIV)

So many think they are Christians and will get to heaven because they are “good,” they do good things, they obey the laws, the give to charities, they speak nicely and on and on.  We can be considered to be the nicest person to ever walk this planet and that is not good enough to get into the presence of God.  There is only one way.  That one way was determined by God.  That one way isn’t closed-minded but a requirement made by the One Who made all that was, is or ever will be.  That one way is through God’s only begotten Son, the One Who was with Him from the beginning, His Word made flesh in the form of the One we call Jesus.  It’s not that “good works” aren’t necessary.  Good works follow our belief and acceptance into our hearts, minds and lives through the obedience out of our love for God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.  God is love and merciful.  He proved it through the sending of His Son to demonstrate His love than take our place for our sin of separation from our Creator.  That is proof enough.  When we allow Jesus into us His Holy Spirit confirms His truth.  We do “good works” not out of fear or out of the false notion we are earning our way to heaven but out of a love for God and a desire to serve and please Him and share His love with those around us.  There is no way we can do enough “good works” to be in His presence but being in His presence motivates and equips us to allow His Holy Spirit to do real good works through us.  Let us remember It is only through Jesus that we can call God our Father.  Let us continually thank and praise Him through the works He equips us to do.
