Asking for Needs

Matthew 6:8 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. (NIV)

Since God knows what we need, why does He want us to ask for our needs?  When we express our needs out loud to Him, we become aware of what we are asking.  We don’t always know the difference between, needs, wants, desires and lust.  Asking aloud helps us hear what it is we are asking.  Lots of times, when I go shopping, I stop and think how many hours of labor it takes to earn the money to buy a particular item.  That helps me decide if it is really a need, a want or desire and worth the effort to buy it. The more affluent we are, the more we have trouble discerning our needs from our wants.  This increases the chances of material goods becoming our idols.  Let us along with asking God for our needs, be willing to listen to Him and be willing to change our thinking and what we need.  There is nothing wrong with wants and desires above needs as long as they are kept in the right order of priorities in our lives.  We thank God for giving us not only our needs, but so many of our wants as well.
