Exodus 15:26 26 He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.” (NIV)

As a hospital chaplain I am asked frequently by patients to pray for healing.  Many of them want to eat what they want, when they want, drink what they want, smoke what they want and lead sedentary lives yet, expect God to heal them and bless their life style.  God has given us a responsibility for our own health.  He has given us access to wisdom on how to maintain our bodies to be healthy the way He designed them to be.  When we don’t take care, when we are not good stewards of what God has given us we can’t expect Him to intervene and presto, all is back in order.  Yes, it will rain on the just and the unjust.  Disease is not always the result of personal sin but the total sin of humanity against nature and God’s creation.  This doesn’t excuse us from our personal responsibility.  When we start to feel sick we must self-check to see what part in the illness our own choice of life-style played in our sickness.  Let us be good stewards, not only of our money and talents God had given us but also of the bodies He’s given us.
