Put Off the Old Self

Colossians 3:5-10 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. (NIV)

There’s at least a months’ worth of devotions in these verses.  It takes a brave determination to look at them honestly.  We like to think we don’t sin.  But there are some of these things we are told to put to death that we all do.  The most common is lust.  Lust includes many different things.  Some lust after food.  Just look at the obesity rate in this nation.  Others lust for tobacco, alcohol, money through gambling, power over other people, sex outside of marriage and on and on.  We are also to rid ourselves of anger which includes when we’re driving in traffic and others cut us of.  We are told not to lie to each other but we have all been guilty of what we call “harmless, little, white lies.”  We pretend we lie to not hurt others but mostly it’s to protect the image of ourselves we want to show.  I pray we regularly take time to carefully go over these verses from time to time and check how we are doing.  Then confess to our Father the things we have not been able to keep away, ask and accept forgiveness and ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen us in those areas.  These are all from our old self and we are to put on the new self, renewed in the knowledge in the image of God.
