Hands Up

Exodus 17:11 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. (NIV)

Moses knew without God’s intervention the battle would be lost.  God wanted the people to learn not only to look to Him but to work with Him.  Moses’ holding up his hands was the evidence of looking to God and participating in the work of God.  So often we bring our petitions to God then sit back to wait and watch.  We fail to wait and listen to see what part we have to play in our petitions being met.  We are joint-heirs with Jesus.  As joint-heirs, that means we have joint responsibilities.  We can’t just sit back and expect God to do all the work, even though it’s well within His power and ability to do so.  God loves us and wants us to work with Him.  This takes listening after we give Him our petitions.  There are times we might have nothing to do but there will be plenty of times, like the Hebrews wielding their swords while Moses held up his hands that we have work to do with God’s Holy Spirit in us leading the way.  Let us always listen and be ready for anything God calls us to do.
