Luke 2:15 15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” (NIV)

Before we can understand the significance of the shepherds being the first to be told the Messiah has been born, we must understand who the shepherds were and what they were doing.  The sheep surrounding Bethlehem were not the normal sheep.  These sheep were the sheep being raised without spot or blemish to be used as the sin sacrifices in the temple in nearby Jerusalem.  These shepherds were chosen to tend these special sheep.  The Messiah, Jesus, is referred to as the “Lamb of God.”  He died on the cross as the perfect, without spot or blemish, free from any sin, sacrifice once and for all people and time; He was the blood offering for the sin of mankind.  No longer would priest have to sacrifice lambs as the sin offering for the people.  Jesus, the Lamb of God, competed that sacrifice for all time.  How appropriate for the ones who tended the sacrificial lambs would be the first to see the Sacrificial Lamb of God. God has a purpose for everything He does.  Everything He does knits together.  Let us take this to heart and trust God through each and everything that comes our way. Let us rejoice with the shepherds that God has taken care of our sin once and for all.
