Swaddling Clothes

Luke 2:12 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. (KJV)

Why would the angel say finding the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes would be a sign to them that that babe was the Lamb of God?  It was common practice to wrap a new-born baby in swaddling clothes for the baby’s comfort and protection.  It was also common practice for the priestly shepherds, the ones tending the sheep for the sin sacrifices in the temple in Jerusalem, to wrap the new-born lambs in swaddling clothes and lay the in a manger.  This was to give the young lambs a chance to calm down after their birth and gain a little strength before being put by their mother.  This was a sign to these shepherds that this babe, wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger was indeed the promised Lamb of God, the promised Messiah.  We can barely imagine the joy in the hearts of the shepherds who really understood the gift they were seeing.  They would never leave their sheep unattended at night for anything less than the permanent replacement for the sheep they attended. Let us take joy in the Lamb of God Who has taken away our sins and brought us, through belief and faith in Him, into the family of God for all eternity.
