Trust and Obey

Genesis 15:4 4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” (NIV)

Abraham was a man of faith.  Yet, though God promised him a son from his own flesh, Abraham allowed his wife, Sara, to feed his doubt and have a son through Hagar, Sara’s slave.  It was a 25 year wait for Abraham to see God’s promise come through and Sara to give birth to Abraham’s son, Isaac.  Later we see Abraham’s faith very strong as he obeys God and prepares to sacrifice his son, Isaac.  We are impatient people.  We don’t understand God’s timing and because of that we often take things into our own hands.  This is a lack of faith and trust in the One Who can never lie, Who is always faithful to His promises.  We might not understand what seems like a delay of God in the fulfillment of a promise but we are the ones who can’t see beyond the moment we are living.  Let us choose to believe and trust God’s promises.  Let us wait for His directions and not rush ahead of God’s timing.  We don’t need to understand.  We need only to trust and obey.  As the old hymn says, “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”
