1 Timothy 1:3-5 3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer 4 or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith. 5 The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. (NIV)

We are warned so often to read labels of what we eat.  There is a lot of junk hyped as good food for our bodies.  We are being warned in Timothy to be careful of what we listen to or read.  Not everything said or written in the name of Jesus is on target.  We need to constantly ask the Holy Spirit to give us discernment when we listen or read what others say God is saying to us.  There is a lot of junk being preached and written.  When we hear it over and over it become hard not to buy into it.  This is yet another reason we must diligently study the scriptures under the direction of the Holy Spirit within us to be able to recognize when we hear or read interpretations of others that are not sound doctrine.  This includes reading this devotional site.  What God says to me and how I interpret it may not interpret right for you.  So, before listening to someone or reading what someone has written, always pray first for wisdom and discernment.  God has promised if we ask for wisdom, He will give it to us.  As important as it is for us to get the junk food out of our diet, it is even more important to get the religious myths and incorrect doctrines out of our spiritual lives.
