Matthew 11:2-3 2 When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else? (NIV)

Earlier, when John immersed Jesus, John said Jesus was the One to come, the Messiah.  Now we see John doubting.  John was in prison.  There was no encouragement.  He seldom got word of what was happening on the outside and the word he got he needed to confirm some way.  In spite of John’s doubts, Jesus said Matthew 11:11),  Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

Jesus didn’t condemn John for his time of doubt.  He said John was great.  We condemn ourselves when we have moments of doubts or when we think we aren’t doing enough for the Kingdome of heaven, yet Jesus said the lest of us is greater than John.  Doubts are part of our human nature.  They will come and go.  When they come, we only need to turn our minds and hearts to the scriptures and receive confirmation that Jesus is Who He said He is and we are, through our belief and following Jesus are God’s children as He said we are.  John was before Jesus died on the cross for the sins of mankind.  We are after and have received the Holy Spirit in us as confirmation of our relationship to God.  We have access to all the gifts of the Holy Spirit to use in our ministry of furthering the Kingdome of God in the hearts of all we meet.  How blessed we are.  John had to have his confirmation just through the actions of Jesus. We have confirmation through the inner dwelling of the Holy Spirit.  What greater confirmation could anyone ever ask.
