Exodus 6:2-3 Then God spoke to Moses, telling him, “I am Yahweh. 3 I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty, but I did not reveal My name Yahweh to them. (ESV)

Names are important.  They were originally meant to describe who we are. Today we call people by job descriptions instead of names.  We say, Doctor, Captain, Sarge, Pastor, Reverend, and on and on.  We are told not to call people by titles.  We are to use their name.  We have lots of names for God.  But God told Moses He had one name.  That name is Yahweh.  The Israelites considered that name to be so holy they wouldn’t say it aloud.  When they wrote it they left out the vowels, they used a new pen and destroyed the pen right after they wrote that name.  They used many other names to describe God.  Quite often we use other names without consciencelessly doing so.  We look to God as a genie to grant us a temporary wish and them forget about Him.  We look to Him as a doting grandfather to give us a love pat the treat Him as if He was napping.  God is Yahweh, I AM.  He is not meant to be forgotten at any point of our day.  He is not with us just to give us what we want when we want it.  He is here so we can live, united with Him.  Let us not misuse His name or even misuse the names that describe some of the things He does.  Let us remember what a privilege He has given us through His Word, His Son, Jesus in allowing us to call Him by name.  Let us never abuse that privilege.
