Branches

John 15:5 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. (NIV)

What does it mean to be a branch?  A branch is absolutely useless and nothing without being attached to the vine or tree.  It get’s all it’s nourishment from the vine.  It can only produce fruit when it get’s nourishment from the vine.  For us to be a branch, we must realize without God, we are helpless, we are nothing.  We must stay attached to Him, get our nourishment from Him.  We must realize we are nothing apart from Him.  When attached to Him we are continually being filled with the Holy Spirit.  It is the Holy Spirit working through us that produces fruit.  When we think we have wisdom on our own, we will eventually fail.  We must come to the place where we realize apart from God, we are nothing but a body containing a sinful and flawed being.  It’s scary at first to realize we are nothing but as we realize it, our trust and faith in God grows.  Personally, I know I could never write any of the devotions that have been typed by my fingers over the last 9 or 10 years.  It is only the Holy Spirit within me working through me.  Let us all realize our total helplessness without being and staying attached to the vine, Jesus.  We stay attached through reading, studying and meditating on the written word, the Holy Bible, and often conversations with our Father, God.
