John 15:2 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. (NIV)

No one enjoys times that are hard.  We want everything to be as beautiful as a rose garden.  But most roses have thorns.  Their thorns are for protection.  God allows us to go through trials for protection from us drifting away from Him.  Notice He cuts off any branch (person) that doesn’t bear fruit.  But he only prunes those who do bear fruit.  Why would He prune His fruit bearers?  When we prune branches on plants, we end up with multiple branches coming out of the place we pruned.  Pruning us (allowing us to walk through unpleasant trials) encourages us to pay attention to Him, change direction where necessary and be an even better and more productive vessel for the Holy Spirit to do His work through us.  When we go through those trials, let’s immediately ask God what it is in us that needs changing.  Then, with the help of the Holy Spirit we can move on, become more like Jesus Christ, and be more productive for our God.
