In the Name…

John 14:13 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. (NIV)

So many tack on “in the name of Jesus” at the end of their prayers.  We must understand what it means to pray in someone else’s name.  When we do or speak in the name of someone else we are saying that the person with that name gave us the authority to speak or do what ever we are saying or doing.  Just automatically adding the name of Jesus to the end of our prayers isn’t a magic wand.  Doing that is using His name in vain.  When we pray and use the name of Jesus, we must be sure we are praying in agreement with God’s written word and we are allowing the Holy Spirit to direct our prayers and actions.  The purpose of asking in the name of Jesus is not a means to be sure our prayer is answered but a means for the Father to be glorified in His Son.  When we say “in the name of Jesus,” we are not only praying in the authority Jesus has given us, we are verbally glorifying the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ.  So, let’s not just tack on “in the name of Jesus;” let’s be sure we know we are actively speaking what the Holy Spirit directs while giving glory to God the Father and God the Son, Jesus.
