Intellectual Interpretation

2 Corinthians 10:5 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (NIV)

Many people think they are smart enough, had enough theological courses and read enough to interpret scripture on their own.  The One qualified to interpret scripture is the author, the Holy Spirit.  Apart from the Holy Spirit no physical, human intelligence can possibly interpret what is Spirit.  There is such a large amount of pride amongst intellectual scholars of God’s written word, the Holy Bible.  There is no way our finite minds, on their own, can possible correctly interpret what is written by the Spirit of God.  Unless we are in Christ Jesus and have learned to listen to the soft, gently voice of the 3rd Person of the Trinity of God, the Holy Spirit, there is no way we can fully interpret, understand and apply the principles of the Bible.  There is nothing wrong with taking theological courses and feeding our intellects but let us remember it is only through opening our intellects to the Holy Spirit that true interpretation comes.  Let us combine our finite intellects with the openness to the Holy Spirit that we can take captive every thought to make ourselves obedient to Christ.
