The Crowd

Matthew 27:23 23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him (NIV)

Let’s look at the crowd.  It was only a week ago they were lined on both sides of the road waving palm branches and shouting praises to Jesus.  They were rejoicing in the One they expected to bring them freedom.  They are some of the ones who had been healed by Him.  They listened to His parables and teaching.  Now they were waving their fists and shouting, “Crucify Him.”  Crowd mentality is an interesting subject.  When in a crowd we start acting like herd animals.  We want to blend in with the crowd.  We want to agree with the majority.  We see this mentality on major shopping days.  It only takes one person to grab an item before others join in and fights begin.  We must ask ourselves if we have ever gone with the crowd when part of us knew that wasn’t the right thing to do.  It takes courage to stand up for what is right when others are shouting and proclaiming what is wrong.  We must ask ourselves what we would do if we were in that crowd on that Friday?  Do we know where we stand?  Do we keep silent in the presence of those who speak against Christians?  Let us speak out in love.  Let us make sure others know we accept them, just not their values.
