Thank the Source

Colossians 1:3-4 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people (NIV)

We all like recognition.  We like a pat on our back.  We like to be told thanks for a job well done.  Paul doesn’t do that.  He doesn’t thank other believers for the work they do because we aren’t capable of doing the work.  It is God Who does the work through us.  Paul goes right to the Source and thanks God for the work done by believers in other places.  We have a major pride problem when we think how good we are at what we do.  I’ve learned I must pray and ask God for wisdom before any project I might tackle.  I’ve learned to pray before I talk to someone about God and His gracious gift of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ.  Paul warns us to pray without ceasing.  That’s about the best advice we can ever receive.  Not only should we pray for ourselves, we need to join Paul in praying for all those who are spreading the good news of the salvation available to all who will choose to believe and follow Jesus.  We don’t deserve or earn thanks and praise for being a vessel God works through.  His working through us is an undeserved privilege.  Let us thank God for those who have helped us along our way.  Let us be available to be one of those through whom God helps others.
