Everyone Builds Up

1 Corinthians 14:26 26 What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.  (NIV)

Think about the last church service you attended.  Did you contribute?  Did everyone contribute?  Or, did the preacher and the worship leader serve as the only ones who contributed to the service.  So many services the only contribution of the congregation is singing a few songs.  The purpose of coming together for a time of worship is to build up each and every person.  Just like muscles can’t be built up without exercising, when we just sit, not only cane we not be built up spiritually, we can’t help build up others.  There is always something each person can do in a worship service.  The obvious are ushers, song leaders and those who are on the platform.  There are some who will read scripture.  Others can lead in the various prayers.  One very important ministry for a worship service is greeting those who come.  Not only greeting them when they come but also talking to them as they are leaving.  The scripture isn’t talking about building up the church in numbers.  The believers are the church.  Next worship service let’s be sure to make ourselves available to serve in building up ourselves along with building up others who have come to gather together. 1 Corinthians 14:26 26 What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.
