Continually Confess

1 John 1:9 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.  (NIV)

The verb tense in the English translation is not in agreement with the original.  Confession is not a one-time thing.  We are to continually confess our sins – not repeats of ones already confessed and repented but the sins we make daily.  I don’t know about you but never a day goes by without my doing or saying or thinking something that is out of character with the character of Jesus.  Those things need confession daily.  We don’t just say, “Father forgive me for any sins I did today.”  We must be specific.  We need to be specific so we will actually realize what we have done, said or failed to do so we can repent – turn away from it – and move on building the character of Jesus in our thoughts, words and deeds.  Think you got through the day without any sin?  Be quite, ask the Holy Spirit to review the day with you and you will learn how imperfect we are in our human nature.  Let us continually confess each and every sin and God will continue to be faithful, forgiving us and continuing to purify us from all unrighteousness.
