Word for Today

2 Timothy 4:3 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.  (NIV)

This is a very applicable word for today.  We see it in the looting and property damage going on.  We see it in the pushing ahead in various lines.  We hear the “me first” attitude so prevalent in our culture today.  People like to be the ones in power over other people.  People don’t want to hear about God.  They want to be their own god.  They don’t want God to be mentioned in school and want to teach things God says are evil.  We even have false teachers in Christian churches teaching self- gratification.  Many denominations are changing definitions of words in the Bible in order to agree with the god-less culture of today.  What do we do about this?  We must stand strong in our faith.  We must speak out in love, not in judgement.  Most important, we must go into our prayer war-room and bind the evil forces trying to deceive this world and pray to loose the power and wisdom of the Holy Spirit.

Start the Engine

1 Corinthians 12:3 3 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.  (NIV)
Acts 19:2 2 and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”
They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” (NIV)

Acts 9:17 17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” (NIV)

When we accept Jesus as the Lord of our life we do so because the Holy Spirit has come into our minds and hearts to open up to Him.  There is no way to accept Jesus as the Lord of our lives without the invite and power of the Holy Spirit for our normal, sinful, human nature is opposed to anything or anyone other than ourselves being Lord.  However, like putting gas in a car and never turning on the engine – the gas does no good and is powerless without us turning on the engine – so it is with the Holy Spirit Who entered into us when we opened our hearts to Jesus.   We need to be awaken to the fact that the Holy Spirit in us with all His power and wisdom is really in us.  Many people call this the baptism of the Holy Spirit.  What it really is. is the awareness of the Holy Spirit within us and allowing the Holy Spirit to speak in and through us and to work in and through us.  In so many denominations and churches little is said and even less taught about the Holy Spirit.  May I suggest a word study on the Holy Spirit to learn how He speaks in and through us and how He works in and through us.  Without allowing the Holy Spirit to work in and through us we can only be lukewarm like the church in Laodicea.   Let us all learn how to let the Holy Spirit speak and work in and through us with all His wisdom and power.

Recognize Satan

Ephesians 6:12 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.  (NIV)

There are Christians who don’t believe Satan really exists.  So many think their struggles are because of others or the culture or their own mistakes.  They are their own mistakes in that they don’t recognize the deceptive voices of Satan.  Satan would have us believe the lie that the Holy Bible is outdated.  He would tell us to get with the times.  He is the one encouraging Christian denominations to accept same-sex marriages and gay and lesbian lifestyles.  These are strictly forbidden by God.  God created male and female.  He did not create a third category of gender.  One of our problems is we confuse the sin from the sinner.  Because of our verbal attacks on the sinner rather than the sin, we are producing more enemies of God.  Notice when Jesus turned over the money tables in the temple He didn’t attack the money changers, only what they were doing.   There are many other lies of Satan that we tend not to recognize.  That is another reason why it is so important for us to really make God’s written word, the Holy Bible, an active part of our minds.  Let us really know God’s word and ask the Holy Spirit to help us distinguish the voice of Satan so we can stand firmly against him.

Family of God

Ephesians 4:4 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called;  (NIV)

Just as there are different circles of family groups: the immediate, the 3 generational, the clan of relatives, yet they are all family, there are different circles of the family of God.  We call them local church, denominations and the entire body of Christ.  We always don’t act like a living family.  Sometimes we act like we’re in competition with one another.  When we read on in Ephesians and throughout the written word of God, the Holy Bible, we are told over and over to bear with one another, to get along with one another.  It’s hard for some immediate families to do this and seems even harder for the Family of God to do this.  It starts with just one person who is determined to choose love, patience and the grace of God to swallow the sin of pride and self-righteousness and determine to get along with all of God’s children.  Let us each be that one.  The Family of God will be much more inviting for others to come into our family if they could only see more love, patience and grace actually practiced in our family.

United in Holiness

1 Corinthians 3:3-4 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? 4 For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere human beings? (NIV)

This still applies to so many regular, very committed church goers today.  For when one says, “I am Methodist, I am Baptist, I am Pentecostal” and on and on.  We jealousy brag about our own particular denominational choice and quarrel over the minor differences.  As a hospital chaplain, I’m often asked what church I’m with.  I never answer that question.  My answer is I believe and follow Jesus Christ, the only Son of God Who gave His life for my sins and rose from death that I may have life eternally with God.  This is what we are to be about.  We are to spread the good news of the grace and love of God through His Son, Jesus Christ.  Let us remember, since we are the temple of God because His Holy Spirit is in us, we are holy vessels.  Let us go beyond being worldly.  Let us be united in the love of our God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Love Personified

Romans 14:1 1 Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. (NIV)

This is why there are so many denominations.  We think everyone should totally agree with what we think and/or believe.  We dispute over how communion is served.  We dispute over how, when or if one is baptized.  We dispute over so many things.  What we are to agree on is God sent His Word, Jesus, to become as man to demonstrate His love for us, show and teach us how to live, die on the cross for our sin and rise back to full life to give us eternity with God.  That is what matters.  Let’s not get into disputes with how others express their beliefs in how to demonstrate God’s love and how to worship Him.  We are to show love to one another.  It is love for and of God and through Him for all His creation included our fellow human beings, regardless of what they believe or how they live.  God is love.  We are created in His Image, therefore we must also be love personified.

Definitions

Revelation 22:18-19 18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. 19 And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll. (NIV)

Isaiah 40:8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever (NIV)

There are a few protestant denominations trying to change the word of God.  When they find that difficult they try to change the definition of the word they don’t like.  It appears they aren’t concerned with following the commands of God.  The want to appeal to the present day culture.  I’m so glad the apostles were more concerned with obeying and walking with our Lord than fitting in with their present-day culture.  God knows what is best for us to live an abundant life.  He doesn’t command things to ruin our fun and pleasure.  He is protecting us for troubles we can’t see on down the road.  I hope, if you’re in one of the denominations trying to change God’s commands or the definition of words used for centuries you will speak up and be counted.  Jesus had no problem correcting the religious leaders of His day and we should do the same.  No matter what some try to do, God’s word will endure forever.

Extra Rules

Matthew 15:8-9 8 “‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.  They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules. (NIV)

Jesus is quoting from the prophet Isaiah.  So many churches even today have added to scripture making their own rules that people are supposed to follow.  Many churches even split because of the man-made rules.  In our human nature we want to be better than others and tell others to be like us.  We want others to worship the same way we do, eat what we eat, dislike what we dislike and on and on.  Jesus said we are to be one in Him and in each other.  Being one means to love as God loves.  It doesn’t mean we must do everything alike.  Some worship on their knees, some standing.  What counts is worship from the heart.  Let us stop criticizing others for doing things differently from us.  Let us not agree with those who would require people follow man-made rules.  Let us follow the commands of God and love one another and worship God with our entire heart and mind in whatever way the Holy Spirit leads us.
