Family of God

Ephesians 4:4 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called;  (NIV)

Just as there are different circles of family groups: the immediate, the 3 generational, the clan of relatives, yet they are all family, there are different circles of the family of God.  We call them local church, denominations and the entire body of Christ.  We always don’t act like a living family.  Sometimes we act like we’re in competition with one another.  When we read on in Ephesians and throughout the written word of God, the Holy Bible, we are told over and over to bear with one another, to get along with one another.  It’s hard for some immediate families to do this and seems even harder for the Family of God to do this.  It starts with just one person who is determined to choose love, patience and the grace of God to swallow the sin of pride and self-righteousness and determine to get along with all of God’s children.  Let us each be that one.  The Family of God will be much more inviting for others to come into our family if they could only see more love, patience and grace actually practiced in our family.

United in Holiness

1 Corinthians 3:3-4 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? 4 For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere human beings? (NIV)

This still applies to so many regular, very committed church goers today.  For when one says, “I am Methodist, I am Baptist, I am Pentecostal” and on and on.  We jealousy brag about our own particular denominational choice and quarrel over the minor differences.  As a hospital chaplain, I’m often asked what church I’m with.  I never answer that question.  My answer is I believe and follow Jesus Christ, the only Son of God Who gave His life for my sins and rose from death that I may have life eternally with God.  This is what we are to be about.  We are to spread the good news of the grace and love of God through His Son, Jesus Christ.  Let us remember, since we are the temple of God because His Holy Spirit is in us, we are holy vessels.  Let us go beyond being worldly.  Let us be united in the love of our God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Love Personified

Romans 14:1 1 Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. (NIV)

This is why there are so many denominations.  We think everyone should totally agree with what we think and/or believe.  We dispute over how communion is served.  We dispute over how, when or if one is baptized.  We dispute over so many things.  What we are to agree on is God sent His Word, Jesus, to become as man to demonstrate His love for us, show and teach us how to live, die on the cross for our sin and rise back to full life to give us eternity with God.  That is what matters.  Let’s not get into disputes with how others express their beliefs in how to demonstrate God’s love and how to worship Him.  We are to show love to one another.  It is love for and of God and through Him for all His creation included our fellow human beings, regardless of what they believe or how they live.  God is love.  We are created in His Image, therefore we must also be love personified.

Revelation 22:18-19 18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. 19 And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll. (NIV)

Isaiah 40:8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever (NIV)

There are a few protestant denominations trying to change the word of God.  When they find that difficult they try to change the definition of the word they don’t like.  It appears they aren’t concerned with following the commands of God.  The want to appeal to the present day culture.  I’m so glad the apostles were more concerned with obeying and walking with our Lord than fitting in with their present-day culture.  God knows what is best for us to live an abundant life.  He doesn’t command things to ruin our fun and pleasure.  He is protecting us for troubles we can’t see on down the road.  I hope, if you’re in one of the denominations trying to change God’s commands or the definition of words used for centuries you will speak up and be counted.  Jesus had no problem correcting the religious leaders of His day and we should do the same.  No matter what some try to do, God’s word will endure forever.

Extra Rules

Matthew 15:8-9 8 “‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.  They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules. (NIV)

Jesus is quoting from the prophet Isaiah.  So many churches even today have added to scripture making their own rules that people are supposed to follow.  Many churches even split because of the man-made rules.  In our human nature we want to be better than others and tell others to be like us.  We want others to worship the same way we do, eat what we eat, dislike what we dislike and on and on.  Jesus said we are to be one in Him and in each other.  Being one means to love as God loves.  It doesn’t mean we must do everything alike.  Some worship on their knees, some standing.  What counts is worship from the heart.  Let us stop criticizing others for doing things differently from us.  Let us not agree with those who would require people follow man-made rules.  Let us follow the commands of God and love one another and worship God with our entire heart and mind in whatever way the Holy Spirit leads us.

Fitting Together

Nehemiah 4:6 6 So we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the people worked with all their heart.(NIV)

To understand the import of this verse we must read Nehemiah chapter 3.  In this chapter we read how various different tribes rebuilt different portions of the walls and gates.  Each tribe did their own section.  In the end, all sections fit together and the wall and gates were rebuilt.  Instead of tribes today, we have a various group of denominations and individual churches.  God has various ministries for each individual group.  One group should not interfere with the ministry of another but allow each denomination, church and individual to work in the ministry designed for them by God.  We can’t see how they all fit together as the “walls” surrounding the Kingdome of God are not finished but we must be sure to be about the ministry God has assigned to each one of us while encouraging others to do the same.  God desires to flow through us to prepare for the New Earth, His Kingdome coming.  Let us be about our ministry.
