Fire Brings Life

Isaiah 43:2 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.  When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.  (NIV)

I was watching a documentary on forest fires and they said it take a fire for many of the plants to germinate.  That reminded me of the above verse.  It takes fiery trials for us to germinate the fruit of God’s Holy Spirit.  Without the fiery trials we won’t grow.  We prefer life to be easy, fun and pleasant.  Those conditions, though nice, eventually cause us to be lackadaisical.  God knows what each one of us needs to motivate us to grow in Him.  Each of us walks through different fiery trials according to our needs and God’s plan for us.  A forest looks dead after a fire yet, deep underground, green life is slowly emerging.  As we walk through our trials, things might seem hopeless but the fruit of God’s Holy Spirit is deep within us, and as the fire comes to an end, the fresh life of the fruit of the Holy Spirit gradually emerges.  When we are in the trial, take joy as James wrote for it only burns away the dead growth of sin and the fresh beauty of the fruit of the Holy Spirit will soon emerge.

Dark Valleys

Psalms 23:4 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Wherever we walk, whatever we have to face, even times of pandemics, God never leaves us.  We can totally trust Him for wisdom.  Wisdom says we wear helmets on bikes.  Wisdom says we wash our hands regularly.  Trusting God doesn’t mean we walk around care free without taking proper steps wisdom dictates.  When we walk in the wisdom of God there is nothing we need ever fear.  As long as we are listening, God will correct us when we start to go the wrong way and will lead us with His staff.  It is comforting to know God will keep us on the right path as long as we listen.  As the Hebrews were guided through the desert at night by a column of flame, we are guided in our dark times by the Holy Spirit Who is always in us and always ready to guide us.

Mark 9:49 49 Everyone will be salted with fire. (NIV)

We know God created us in His Image.  However, sin distorted God’s image in us.  We are also familiar with the verses about God being the potter and we being the clay.  In order for the clay to be formed into the image the Potter desires, it must remain flexible.  We must consider how flexible are we?  Do we hang on to an idea so hard that we refuse to listen to others or be corrected when it might be wrong?  As long as the clay is flexible the potter can mold and remold the clay until the right image is seen.  But the potter doesn’t stop with the shaping.  In order for the shape to be useful, the image must go into the fire.  As the image is painted, the process of being fired must be repeated with each coat of paint.  In the process of God reshaping us into His image, we go into the fire furnace many times.  Let’s not look at those times with dread.  These are productive times when different aspects of the Image of our Father are being set into us.  As the sinful aspects of our image are burned away, the righteous aspects of God are burned into existence in us.
