Rear View Mirror

Isaiah 43:18 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

Some of us live our lives looking into the rear view mirror. Often we say, “if only I had” or “if only I didn’t.” We seldom can do anything about what has already been. There are times we can make restitution for something in our past but mostly the past is finished. We cannot go back nor are we meant to go back. When we confess a sin to God God forgets it. We are not to keep re-confessing the same sin. Lot’s wife learned the hard way not to look back. The Hebrews wanted to go back shortly after Moses led them out of Egypt. The past is familiar. There is comfort in the familiar. When we keep looking in our rear view mirror we are missing where we are in the present. When we miss the present we miss out on what God has for us. Let us immerse ourselves in the here and now. God wants our attention now. He wants to use us now. If we are looking in the rear view mirror, wishing for something that was or might have been we are not fully attuned to the present. Let us enjoy the now, thank and praise God for the now and use the now to the fullest possible.

Be Dressed

Luke 12:35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

Be dressed and ready for service? How do we do that? We can’t live our lives always dressed. Jesus is meaning for us to be dressed in His salvation. We are robed in His righteousness. We can take that robe off by turning our backs on Him and going our own ways. What is our service? Our service is worshiping God through our words, our thoughts and our actions. Are we always ready to give God the credit or do we like to take credit for His work through us as being our own credit? Keep our lamps burning? Our lamps are to burn so others can see God’s light shining in and through us. (See devotion titled “The Globe”) The only way I can stay dressed ready for service and keep my lamp burning is through what I call spiritual breathing. First I exhale by confessing my sins to God as soon as I’m aware of them. Then I inhale by asking Him to fill those places in me with His Holy Spirit. This is a multiple times a day event for me. There are many times I open my mouth and let words come out that hurt even though that is not my intention. There are many times I should open my mouth that I choose to stay silent. There are times I should pick up the phone and call someone going through a struggle or who is lonely and times I should make a visit but I fail to do either. Life is full of choices. We need to learn to choose according to God’s word and the furthering of His Kingdom here on earth.
