Giving Honor

John 15:8. My Father is honored by this, that you bear much fruit and show that you are my disciples.

Sometimes we’re not sure how to give honor to God. It is much more than using His name in an honorable way. Jesus said we honor God when we bear much fruit and through that demonstrate what it is to be His disciple. What fruit are we to bear? In Galatians 5:22-23 we read “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self- control. Against such things there is no law.” As these fruits grow in us we are to learn to share them with others, encouraging other believers and bringing in new believers. Our questions are how are our fruits growing and how are we using them?

Honored With Fruits

John 15:8 My Father is honored by this, that you bear much fruit and show that you are my disciples.

God is honored when we bear much fruit.  In our bearing of fruit we demonstrate to the world the love and power of God.  Our question is what is the fruit God wants us to bear and how do we do it.  We read in Galatians 5:22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  These are the fruits we are to bear.  We cannot grow these fruits on our own.  It takes God’s Holy Spirit within us to plant the seeds of these fruits.  Then it takes the trials and experiences God sends our way to grow the fruits.  I’ve had fruit in a bowl that just sat there.  I could admire it but if I didn’t use it, eat it, it would rot.  As our fruit God grows within us we must be sure to use that fruit in service to God.  This service is in sharing all our fruit with all those God sends our way.  It is through the sharing of these fruits that God is honored and more of His created people can become adopted into His family through His Son, Jesus.  Our question is what are we doing with our fruits?  Are we content to just admire what God is growing in us?  Are we content with just one or two fruits and ignore any others?  Let us honor God in receiving, growing and using all fruits the Holy Spirit brings us.  God wants us to have all the fruits, grow them and use them for His glory.

Fervent Prayer

Ephesians 6:18 With every prayer and petition, pray a at all times in the Spirit, and to this end b be alert, with all perseverance and requests for all the saints.

Wow.  That is a lot.  It starts out “with EVERY prayer and petition.”  What is it we are to do every time we pray and/or ask God for something?  We are to pray or ask in the Spirit.  Praying in the Spirit is not confined to praying in a different tongue.  Praying in the Spirit also means praying in the will and manner of God.  Jesus demonstrated this to us through what we all call, “The Lord’s Prayer.”  The essence is praying for God’s Kingdom to come on earth in the same way as it is in heaven.  This means we want God’s Kingdon within us and within those for whom we pray.  God’s Kingdon cannot exist in an air of judgement, selfishness or any other self-serving attitude.  It exists with the fruits of God’s Spirit and it is with these fruits we are to pray.  We are also told to be alert with perseverance in all requests for all the saints.  I’ve been guilty of leaving the church prayer list at church and flippantly ask God to be with all those on the prayer list.  That is not perseverance and definitely not requiring alertness from me.  Our question is are we willing to take the time and effort to pray with perseverance and alertness in the manner of Jesus or would we rather be flippant in our prayers?  I’ve always taught my children anything worthwhile takes an effort.  Prayer is no exception.  Prayer for ourselves, our families, our friends, the other believers and those who are lost.  Let us get serious in our prayers.

Know God

John 6:69 We a have come to believe and to know b that you are the Holy One of God!”

The disciples knew of God.  They had been taught the scriptures and intellectually knew about God.  When they came to know Jesus they came to believe Him and truly know Him.  Our question is do we really know God or do we  just know of God?  Intellectual knowledge is good and needed.  But we must have more than intellectual knowledge of God.  Satan has that.  We must truly know God within us as part of our being.  The only way to really know God is through His Son Jesus by way of His Holy Spirit.  It is His Holy Spirit Who reveals God to us.  We receive His Holy Spirit when we invite Jesus into our hearts and lives as our Lord and Savior.  As we come to know God more and more the fruits of His Spirit grow in us.  As His fruits grow in us we come to know Him more.  It is a beautiful cycle that grows like a snow ball rolling down a hill.  It is good to feed our intellects but let us not neglect allowing God’s Holy Spirit to feed our spirits as well.

Ephesians 4:22 You were taught with reference to your former way of life to lay aside a the old man who is being corrupted in accordance with deceitful desires,

I have written a devotion on this blog every day for about 4 years.  That doesn’t count the ones published  before this blog.  Sometimes I’m tired and I think about reposting an old devotion.  I can’t do that.  Each day is a day that I grow closer to my Lord.  Each day some of the fruits of His Holy Spirit grow a little within me.  If we are the same tomorrow as we are today we have waisted a day, a day that God would give us more growth in Him.  Any testamony about what God did in and through us in the past is outdated   Our question is what is God doing in and through us this very day?  What are we going to allow Him to do?  Are we willing to be the pliable clay for Him to continue to mold and shapePL acording to His will and purpose or are we going to be like dried out clay, not able to be shapen afresh?  The choice is ours.  God is waiting each and every day

Matthew 6:21-22 But accumulate for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Store up treasures in heaven. What kind of treasures and how do we store them in heaven? Treasures for heaven are produced through the power of God’s Holy Spirit. The treasures are the fruits of His Spirit: love joy peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, self control, faithfulness and goodness. Anything that produces any of these fruits is a treasure being stored in heaven. All our thoughts, words and actions should be measured against these fruits. We criticize, judge and condemn so often without really thinking. We seek for self-gratification rather than helping others. We seek material wealth and possessions rather than giving of our best to others in need. Our question is what do we want as a treasure and where do we want it?

Cleaning Time

Philippians 3:13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead

Ever since a young child I have always dedicated the week between Christmas and New Years to clean my room. As an adult I go through the house and donate or trash what can be donated or trashed. After I met Jesus as my Lord I started adding something to the house cleaning. I now include spiritual cleaning during that week. I take time to ask God what in me needs to have His light shed and where I need His cleansing. This time goes deeper than my normal times of confession and repentance through the year. I have a long way to take hold of the fruits of God’s Holy Spirit, which reflect His image, but I am determined to push on with Him. Won’t you join me?
