Gossip in Prayer

Proverbs 26:22. The words of a gossip are like delicious morsels; they go down into a persons innermost being.

We think we don’t gossip but listen to the prayer requests we make on behalf of others. Do we really need to know all the details of someone’s need to pray for them? This. Is a Christian form of gossip. God knows their needs, He knows their situation. All we need do is lift them up. Encore the throne of God. We need not and should not go into detail of their situation. It is enough to say physical healing, emotional healing, financial healing or spiritual healing. Those 4 categories cover all our needs and situations. Let us stop using prayer requests as our way of divulging the problems of others. We read in Proverbs 15:2 “The tongue of the wise treats knowledge correctly,
but the mouth of the fool spouts out folly.”

Knowledge ofGood and Evil

Genesis 2:17.  but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will surely die.” 

The first we read of knowledge in the Bible is right after God creates Adam.  God told Adam not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.  Adan was created in God’s image and only knew God’s  love and goodness.  He had no knowledge of evil.  Satan came into the picture and I ticked man to seek to know more than God.  We inherit that nature today.  We listen to the news to hear all that is happening. We listen to gossip.  We get on social media to find out about others.  We seek knowledge of all types.  Our question is what proportion of our time do we spend seeking the knowledge God has for us in His written word (the Holy Bible) compared to the time seeking knowledge through the worldly sources?  Let’s get our proportions right during this Lenten season.

Word Spoken

Psalms 139:4 Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether.  

How often we “put our foot in our mouth” by saying a word we shouldn’t say?  I know I have on numerous times,  Once a word is spoken it can’t be taken back.  God has provided a solution for what I call “foot in mouth disease.”. He says He knows our words before they form in our mouth.  The question is are we willing to slow down our words enough to listen to Him?  It doesn’t take long if we really want to hear.  I’m getting better on listening before speaking it but I still get it in my mind and heart and speak it softly to myself.  As I do this I sence God correcting me.  With practice I will become better at wanting to hear God than I want to think and say the word I shouldn’t.  It is usually a word that would make somebody hurt or feel bad. It could be a word of gossip.  There are many things that word could be that we would regret after hearing from God.  Would it not be better to listen to God first before saying or even thinking the word?

From the Rooftop

Luke 12:3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs. (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

So many have been embarrassed or gotten in trouble for what they posted in their e-mail or some social media on the internet. They did not realize that what is in the internet can be seen by people other than the intended. Jesus said what we say or whisper will be proclaimed from the roofs. We think it is safe to gossip about someone in supposed confidence to another. What we say will come back to us. God hears our every word and thought. When we are talking to others we must realize that God is also there. When we are thinking about what we will say or do God hears our thoughts. Paul gave us instructions when he wrote, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. (The Holy Bible, New International Version. Pradis: Phillipians 4:8). Bad thoughts will come to us. Critical thoughts about others will come to us. We are not responsible for those brief encounters but are responsible for what we do with them. Our question is will we remember God is always with us and quickly dismiss anything that doesn’t line up with His Word?

Pr 11:13 A gossip betrays a confidence,  but a trustworthy man keeps a secret.


You say you don’t gossip?  So often gossip is disguised.  Even at church prayer groups there is gossip.  It is hidden in the form of a prayer request.  We think we must know all the details before we can pray for someone.  All we need to know is they are in need of prayer.  God already knows their needs.  We need only lift their name up before the throne of grace of God.  Gossip is disguised as passing on news of another.  We so often think that gossiping is only in sharing the bad about someone.  Gossiping is talking about someone else’s business with an uninvolved party.  We need to guard our mouths and be sure what we share is needed and will not hurt another.  Let us be trustworthy.
